Opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Justin Muturi have intensified their preparations for the 2027 General Election after taking their political mobilisation campaign to Nyeri County, a region considered strategically important in the battle for the Mount Kenya vote.
The two leaders led a delegation to Othaya, where they attended a church service before engaging members of the public in a political rally. The visit was seen as an effort by the opposition to strengthen its presence at the grassroots and demonstrate that its campaign is expanding beyond its traditional political strongholds.
Nyeri is particularly significant because it is the political home region of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who remains a key figure within the broader opposition movement. The decision by Kalonzo and Muturi to jointly campaign in the area highlights the increasing importance of the Mount Kenya region as political leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 contest.
The tour also comes as the opposition continues to face questions over who will eventually become its presidential flag bearer. Several leaders are seeking to build political influence and support across different regions, while also publicly calling for unity within the opposition.
Muturi has previously indicated that he would support Kalonzo Musyoka if he was not selected as the opposition’s presidential candidate. Kalonzo, on the other hand, has maintained that the broader goal should be unity and defeating President William Ruto in the 2027 election, regardless of who eventually receives the coalition’s backing.
The Nyeri visit therefore sends a wider political message: the opposition is already working to consolidate support across the country while simultaneously trying to manage internal competition among leaders with presidential ambitions.
