Former Mukurweini Member of Parliament Kabando wa Kabando has called for the formation of stronger political parties capable of mobilising Kenyans around national issues ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kabando says political parties should move away from being centred around individual politicians and instead develop clear ideologies, policies and programmes that address the needs of ordinary Kenyans.
He argues that political formations should have a strong grassroots presence and should be able to mobilise support across different regions of the country.
Kabando has also cautioned against the formation of political parties and movements primarily to advance the personal interests of individual leaders.
His comments come at a time when political activity is gaining momentum across the country, with various opposition leaders and political groups stepping up their mobilisation ahead of the 2027 polls.
Several political formations have recently intensified grassroots activities, with leaders seeking to build support and establish themselves ahead of the highly anticipated elections.
Kabando says Kenyans need political parties that can provide clear alternatives on issues such as the economy, unemployment, the cost of living, governance and accountability.
He maintains that strong political parties are essential for a healthy democracy because they give voters clear choices and provide a platform through which citizens can participate in national decision-making.
The former MP’s remarks come as politicians increasingly position themselves for the next election, with alliances and political movements expected to continue taking shape in the months ahead.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, the debate over the strength, independence and direction of Kenya’s political parties is expected to intensify.
