Gachagua Meets Sifuna
With the 2027 presidential race approaching, opposition unity is facing a crucial test as Rigathi Gachagua opens talks with Linda Mwananchi leaders, raising fresh questions about who will carry the opposition’s presidential ticket against President William Ruto.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader hosted leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri for discussions centred on possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The meeting reportedly explored ways in which DCP and Linda Mwananchi could work together, amid growing discussions over the selection of a single opposition presidential candidate.
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Gachagua have emerged as names in discussions surrounding the opposition’s possible presidential ticket.
Although Gachagua described the meeting as an effort to counter his portrayal as a tribal leader, sources familiar with the discussions indicated that the talks also explored political cooperation between the two camps.
The engagement comes as Sifuna advances plans to brand his Equitable Party, with the possibility of joint rallies between the two political formations being discussed.
The opposition camps are reportedly considering an agreement on a single presidential candidate, with Kalonzo expected to hold a similar meeting with Gachagua in the coming days.
The talks follow Gachagua’s remarks during a visit to the United States, where he reportedly indicated that he would not rule out supporting Sifuna if political calculations placed the senator at the forefront of the opposition contest.
Meanwhile, DCP has yet to commit to joining the newly unveiled Ukombozi Alliance, led by Kalonzo.
The discussions could further complicate negotiations within the opposition, where some leaders are demanding equitable representation and a fair process in selecting the presidential flag bearer to challenge Ruto in 2027.
