The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested two women accused of extorting money from a person under investigation.
The suspects, identified as Hellen Hashiali Masinde and Violet Ndakwa from Kakamega County, allegedly demanded KES 100,000 claiming they had powerful networks inside the commission that could make the investigation disappear.
According to EACC, they were arrested yesterday after receiving KES 30,000 as part of the demanded amount.
The commission believes the two are part of a wider fraud ring operating in Western Kenya.
The group reportedly targets people with pending cases, either by impersonating EACC officers or by falsely claiming they can influence the outcome of investigations for cash.
Following the sting operation, the suspects were processed at the EACC Western Regional Office before being booked at Bungoma Central Police Station pending further investigations.
EACC has warned the public to be vigilant and avoid dealing with anyone who claims they can terminate graft cases for money.
The commission urged anyone approached with such promises to report immediately to its offices or the nearest police station.Investigations are ongoing to establish if more people are linked to the extortion scheme.
