Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) posted a slight decline in net profit to Sh10.35 billion for the year ended June 30, 2026.The profit was down from Sh10.48 billion recorded in the previous financial year, with the decline attributed to lower finance income.
KenGen said finance income fell from Sh4.1 billion to Sh2.9 billion during the year.At the same time, the power producer reduced its finance costs by 12.1 percent to Sh2 billion through capital and debt management.
Its total borrowings also fell by Sh12.2 billion to Sh97.1 billion.KenGen Managing Director and CEO Peter Njenga said electricity demand continued to rise, with national peak demand reaching a record 2,549 megawatts (MW) on July 15, 2026.
He said the company would focus on expanding generation capacity and strengthening the electricity system to meet rising demand.During the year, KenGen supplied 8,975 gigawatt hours (GWh) to the national grid, accounting for 57.2 percent of total electricity supplied to the grid.
More than 90 percent of the electricity dispatched by KenGen came from renewable sources, mainly geothermal and hydro power.
