A Nairobi court has ordered police to produce within 14 days the driver of a matatu operated by Risen Sacco, which was involved in a fatal crash along Enterprise Road, to face charges of causing death by dangerous driving.
The order comes after a deadly accident involving a Komarock-bound matatu, popularly known as Detat, that overturned in the Industrial Area.
The crash claimed at least four lives, including three passengers and a female pedestrian, while 15 others were left with injuries.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the customized 33-seater was allegedly performing dangerous stunts known as “nyoka nyoka” when the driver lost control near the Dares-Salaam roundabout.
The vehicle hit a central island curb and landed on its side, trapping passengers inside before rescuers intervened.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) later summoned officials of Risen Sacco, saying the Sacco had lost control of its fleet and lacked safety protocols.
The driver, identified as Sammy Mureithi Maina, reportedly survived with a leg fracture and went missing after the incident.
The court now wants him traced and presented to answer to charges of dangerous driving causing death.Families of the victims have demanded justice, calling for an end to reckless driving on the Komarock route.
