What happens when you take the driver out of a race car? That question was put to the test in Italy as fully autonomous race cars battled on the iconic Imola circuit.
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) held its first international multi-car race outside the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, September 5, with five driverless cars competing at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari.
Unlike conventional motorsport, there were no drivers behind the wheel. The cars relied on artificial intelligence, sensors, cameras and onboard systems to navigate the circuit, make racing decisions and compete at high speed.
The cars are based on the Dallara Super Formula SF23, with teams competing using identical vehicles while differentiating themselves through their autonomous software and technology.
The race marked a major milestone for A2RL as it seeks to establish an international championship for fully autonomous racing. Imola’s narrow layout, elevation changes and challenging corners provided a tougher test for the AI systems than the league’s familiar Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.
The event offered a glimpse into a future where artificial intelligence could move from assisting human drivers to taking control of vehicles entirely ,even at racing speeds.
