Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández has been appointed head coach of the Netherlands, taking charge of the national team on a contract that runs through the 2030 World Cup.
The 46-year-old Spaniard replaces Ronald Koeman and becomes the first foreign coach to lead the Netherlands since Austria’s Ernst Happel, who managed the Dutch at the 1978 World Cup.
The appointment represents a major new chapter in Xavi’s coaching career and a significant change of direction for the Netherlands, traditionally managed by Dutch coaches.
Xavi has been without a coaching position since leaving Barcelona in 2024 after three seasons in charge of the Spanish giants.
His arrival comes after Koeman’s second spell as Netherlands manager ended following the 2026 World Cup.
Koeman had returned to the national team in 2023 and guided the Dutch to the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
Their 2026 World Cup campaign, however, ended in the round of 32 after a penalty-shootout defeat by Morocco.
Xavi now inherits a squad with considerable expectations and will be tasked with restoring the Netherlands to the highest level of international football.
The appointment also represents a shift toward a coach whose football philosophy has been heavily influenced by the possession-based style associated with Barcelona and Spain.
As a player, Xavi was one of the defining figures of Barcelona’s most successful era and a central component of Spain’s golden generation.
His coaching career has been considerably shorter, making the Netherlands position his biggest international management challenge to date.
His first major test will come against Germany in the Nations League on September 24.
The long-term target will be the 2030 World Cup, with the Dutch federation handing Xavi a mandate that extends through the tournament.
The decision to appoint a foreign coach is particularly noteworthy given the Netherlands’ long tradition of producing and employing influential Dutch managers.
Happel remains the last foreigner to occupy the position before Xavi’s arrival.
Xavi’s immediate challenge will be to impose his tactical philosophy while adapting to the demands of international football, where managers have considerably less training time with their players than at club level.
The appointment also gives Xavi an opportunity to rebuild his reputation after his Barcelona tenure ended in 2024.
Xavi brings a celebrated playing career, experience at one of Europe’s biggest clubs and a distinctive football philosophy, but he now faces the challenge of translating those qualities into success with the Oranje.
