Inspector general of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered immediate interdiction of officers on cell duty following the death of Gideon Makau in police custody.
In a directive to all regional and station commanders, Kanja said accountability must start with those directly responsible.
Officers who were Manning the report office, charge room and cells at the time of Makau’s death have been suspended pending investigations.
“Every death in custody raises public concern and erodes trust. We must act fast and show that no one is above the law,” Kanja stated.
Makau’s death has drawn fresh public anger, with family members and human rights groups demanding answers.
They argue that past custody cases have dragged without clear outcomes, leaving families without closure.
Under the new directive, commanders must secure CCTV footage, occurrence books, and medical records within 24 hours and hand them to IPOA and the DCI for independent review.
Kanja said the national Police Service is committed to reforms that protect both suspects and officers.
He urged the public to report misconduct and assured due process for interdicted officers.
Rights advocates welcomed the move, saying swift action in Makau’s case could deter negligence and help restore confidence in police stations nationwide.
