Migos Urges Lecturers Resume Teaching
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba is appealing to university lecturers to end their strike and return to lecture halls.
Speaking Monday during World Teachers’ Day celebrations, Migos said the government has cleared all historical arrears owed to dons under the 2017-2021 and 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreements.
The call comes after members of the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) began a nationwide strike on Friday, October 2, over the 2025-2029 CBA.
The unions accuse the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum and the Ministry of unilateral decisions and rejecting a proposed Ksh 9.76 billion settlement they say was never negotiated.
Migos insisted the same goodwill that cleared past debts will guide future talks.
“It is with this same spirit that we are committed to timely negotiation and conclusion of future CBAs, including the 2025-2029 CBA,” he said, urging lecturers to “reciprocate the good faith, obey court orders and return to work.”he added
He said learning should not be interrupted when government is ready to negotiate, as students remain stranded in public universities.
