Standard Group Seeks State Protection
The Standard Media Group has sought protection from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations after receiving threats of a massive invasion of its Nairobi headquarters.
The Mombasa Road based media house says a group identifying itself as Bunge la Mwananchi has announced plans to mobilize more than 5,000 youth to storm its offices on Friday, October 2.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Group said a video circulating online showed members of the group accusing The Standard and KTN News of consistently publishing reports critical of President William Ruto.
The management said it has formally reported the matter at South B Police Station and notified the DCI offices in Makadara as a precautionary measure.
“This is about the safety of our journalists, staff and premises,” the Group said, adding that online criticism had now escalated into direct threats.Despite the intimidation, the company vowed it will not be silenced.
“The Standard Group promises to remain firm and continue to hold leaders accountable,” it stated.
The threats come amid heightened tensions between the media house and the government.
