EXCLUSIVE: The Chelsea Legend Called Dave.

“Az-pi-li-cue-ta! We’ll just call him Dave!”

It started as a joke.

When César Azpilicueta arrived at Chelsea in 2012, supporters struggled with his long Spanish surname. So they found a much simpler solution: Dave.

He laughed. He accepted it. And before long, one of football’s most unexpected nicknames had become part of Chelsea folklore.

Azpilicueta had no idea that the name would follow him for the next 11 years.

Nor could he have imagined just how much he would achieve in blue.

When he arrived at Stamford Bridge from Marseille, Chelsea had just conquered Europe. The club was filled with established stars and huge personalities. Azpilicueta, meanwhile, was simply a young Spanish defender looking for his chance.

He didn’t arrive as a superstar.

He didn’t need to.

He earned his place through hard work, discipline and consistency.

Right-back? He could play there.

Left-back? No problem.

Centre-back? Put him there.

Wing-back? He adapted.

New manager? He adapted again.

Different formation? Same story.

That ability to adapt eventually made him one of the most trusted players at Stamford Bridge.

Under José Mourinho, he became an important part of Chelsea’s 2014/15 Premier League-winning team. When Antonio Conte arrived and switched Chelsea to a three-man defence, Azpilicueta moved into the back three and helped the club win another Premier League title in 2016/17.

He played every minute of that league-winning campaign.

While others grabbed the headlines, Dave simply kept turning up.

Then came the armband.

Azpilicueta became Chelsea captain in 2019, taking responsibility for a team that was constantly changing around him.

His leadership was rarely about shouting or demanding attention. It was about example.

He worked.

He defended.

He accepted responsibility.

And when Chelsea needed him, he was there.

Then came Porto.

On 29 May 2021, Chelsea faced Manchester City in the Champions League final.

For Azpilicueta, the moment carried something special.

He had joined Chelsea just months after the club won its first Champions League in 2012.

Nine years later, he was walking out as captain in another Champions League final.

Chelsea won 1-0.

Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal.

When the final whistle sounded, Azpilicueta lifted the trophy.

The young defender from Spain had become a Champions League-winning captain.

And the man Chelsea supporters called Dave had reached the top of European football.

There was more to come.

Chelsea won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup later in 2021. By the end of his Chelsea career, Azpilicueta had collected the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Then there was the number that perhaps best captured his Chelsea story.

508 Appearences.

That was the number of appearances he made for the club.

He became the first non-Englishman to reach 500 Chelsea appearances.

For 11 seasons, he survived managerial changes, tactical changes, competition for places and the arrival of younger players.

    He just kept going.

That is what made the relationship between Azpilicueta and Chelsea supporters so special.

“Dave” had begun as a joke.

But the man behind the nickname became a leader, a captain and one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.

When he eventually left Chelsea in 2023, he departed after 11 seasons, 508 appearances and a trophy cabinet that most footballers could only dream about.

He had arrived as César Azpilicueta, a relatively unknown Spanish defender from Marseille.

    He left as Azpi.

But to the Chelsea supporters who watched him give everything for the shirt, he was always something else.

    Dave.

The name that started as a joke.

The defender who became a captain.

And the unlikely hero who became a Chelsea legend.
