Your Android phone may no longer need to play second fiddle to your laptop. Google is betting that the next computer you buy should work more like your phone , and it has put a $899 price tag on that idea.
Google has unveiled Googlebook, a new category of laptops built on the Android technology stack and combined with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. The devices are designed around Google’s Gemini AI and deep integration with Android smartphones.
The initial lineup, developed with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo, starts at $899 and features premium materials including aluminium, magnesium alloy and carbon fibre. The laptops will offer touchscreens of up to 2.8K OLED resolution, haptic glass trackpads, backlit keyboards and processors from Intel and Qualcomm, with dedicated NPUs capable of more than 45 TOPS. Google says the devices can deliver up to 14 hours of battery life.
Googlebook is also designed to make Android phones and laptops work more closely together. During setup, users can transfer settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages from their Android phones, with the company saying the process is protected by end-to-end encryption.
Features such as Continue On allow users to resume tasks started on their phones, while Files provides access to phone files and photos from the laptop. Cast My Apps will allow users to stream and interact with phone applications in desktop windows.
The laptops also put Google’s Gemini AI directly into the desktop experience. Tools including Magic Pointer, Rambler and Create My Widget are designed to help users organise information, turn spoken thoughts into structured writing and create customised desktop widgets.
Beyond Google’s own services, Googlebook will support the Chrome browser with extensions, millions of Android apps and creative software including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and CapCut. The devices will also support streaming services, Android games and selected PC titles through GeForce NOW.
Google says security is built into the platform through a hardware root of trust, on-device malware detection and a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor that isolates a Linux environment for developers.
Googlebook is now available for pre-order, starting at $899. Each device includes 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of cloud storage, three months of YouTube Premium and other bundled benefits. Devices are scheduled to arrive from October 4 in the United States, followed by October 5 in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia.
