A night out in Kimende has turned deadly, with three people losing their lives and two others fighting for survival after allegedly consuming illicit alcohol.
Three people have died while two others remain in critical condition after consuming suspected illicit alcohol at a local pub in Kimende, Kiambu County.
The victims were among several people who had been drinking at the establishment, where the alcohol is suspected to have been manufactured and supplied to different outlets within the town.
The deaths have sparked fresh concern among Kimende residents, who are now calling for authorities to revive a crackdown on the manufacture and sale of second generation alcohol in the area.
Speaking to the media on Monday, residents said the continued circulation of illicit alcohol poses a growing threat to the community.
Residents also raised questions over the monitoring of alcohol products in entertainment establishments, faulting the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) over what they described as inadequate oversight.
Authorities are expected to investigate the source of the suspected alcohol and establish the circumstances that led to the deaths and hospitalisation of the five victims
