NTSA Cameras Catching The Wrong Cars?

Imagine receiving a KSh10,000 speeding fine for a vehicle that was nowhere near the road when the alleged offence happened. That is the claim of one Kenyan motorist, raising uncomfortable questions about whether NTSA’s automated traffic cameras can always identify the right vehicle.

A Kenyan motorist has raised concerns over the accuracy of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) automated speed cameras after receiving a KSh10,000 speeding notification for a vehicle he says was not on the road at the time of the alleged offence.

According to the motorist, an NTSA camera captured a Toyota NZE, registration KBW 033X, allegedly speeding on a Kenyan highway.

However, the system reportedly misread the registration number as KDW 033X, a number belonging to his FAW truck, and subsequently assigned the speeding offence to his vehicle.

The motorist maintains that his truck was not on the route when the alleged offence occurred, leaving him questioning how the automated system identified his vehicle.

The incident has raised concerns among motorists over the accuracy of automated traffic enforcement, particularly the ability of speed cameras to correctly read vehicle registration plates.

While technology-driven enforcement is intended to improve road safety and reduce human intervention, cases of alleged misidentification could leave innocent motorists having to prove that they were not responsible for an offence.

The controversy now raises a critical question, if a camera gets your number plate wrong, who gets held responsible, the motorist or the system?
