Upper Thailand is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 4 to September 7, prompting weather authorities to warn of possible flash floods and dangerous surface run-off.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), in an advisory issued at 5am on September 2, said several parts of the country could receive intense rainfall during the four day period. Northern and north-eastern Thailand are expected to record the heaviest rains.
According to the department, the weather conditions are being driven by a monsoon trough extending across the North and upper North east. The system is being strengthened by a moderate south west monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
The combination of these weather systems is expected to bring periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in areas already vulnerable to flooding. Sudden increases in water levels could result in flash floods and run-off, especially in low-lying areas and locations near rivers and streams.
Residents in affected areas have been urged to closely monitor weather updates and remain alert to warnings from local authorities. People living in flood-prone areas are also advised to take precautions and avoid travelling through flooded roads or areas experiencing strong water currents.
The expected rainfall could also affect transport and daily activities if flooding becomes widespread. Authorities are therefore expected to monitor rainfall and water levels closely throughout the period.
The TMD has advised the public to continue following official weather forecasts as the situation develops, particularly from September 4 through September 7, when the risk of heavy rainfall and flooding is expected to be highest.
