Gachagua intensifies criticism of Ruto over vision 2060

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his criticism of President William Ruto, questioning the government’s focus on the proposed Vision 2060 development agenda.

Gachagua argues that the government should prioritise challenges facing Kenyans today instead of concentrating heavily on a long-term development plan.

Speaking in Nyandarua County, Gachagua raised concerns over the challenges facing farmers, including high production costs, poor market access and declining earnings.

He maintained that the government should provide immediate solutions to the problems affecting ordinary Kenyans, particularly those in the agricultural sector.

Gachagua also criticised the government over concerns surrounding security, the rising cost of living and the continued presence of illicit alcohol in parts of the country.

His remarks come as President William Ruto’s administration pushes for a new long-term development framework that will guide Kenya beyond Vision 2030.

The government says Vision 2060 is intended to provide a broader development roadmap for the country and ensure that national development continues beyond individual political administrations.

The proposed plan is expected to involve consultations with different groups, including young people, professionals, the private sector, civil society and religious organisations.

However, Gachagua has continued to challenge the administration’s priorities, arguing that Kenyans should first see tangible improvements in their daily lives.

His criticism comes at a time when political activities are gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua has increasingly positioned himself as a leading critic of the Ruto administration, while opposition leaders continue efforts to build a stronger political alliance ahead of the polls.

The growing disagreement over Vision 2060 therefore goes beyond development policy, with the proposal becoming part of the wider political debate over President Ruto’s record and the direction Kenya should take.

As the government continues with consultations on the long-term plan, opposition leaders are expected to maintain pressure on the administration to address the immediate economic and social concerns facing Kenyans.
