It has been a weekend of political retreats for opposition leaders as the clock ticks towards the 2027 General Election.
Principals of the United Opposition converged in Nairobi to craft a strategy aimed at mounting a united challenge to President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
In a statement released on Monday evening, the leaders said they had agreed to remain united and establish a framework for selecting their presidential candidate.
We have unanimously agreed to execute a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Agreement, through which each Principal commits, individually and collectively, to remain united, participate in a credible process of selecting our presidential candidate, and thereafter fully support and campaign for the candidate chosen to carry our common mandate into the 2027 General Election.”
The leaders pledged to remain together in their joint effort to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.
Sources within the meeting told the media that the leaders also discussed a formula for selecting their presidential flag bearer.
The United Opposition retreat came barely hours after the Linda Mwanachi Movement concluded its own retreat in Limuru, Kiambu County.
Several issues were discussed during the meeting, including the movement’s political identity, as the October 15 deadline approaches for political parties to submit details of their authorised persons and specimen signatures.
The Linda Mwanachi Movement, which has faced headwinds in its attempt to register as a political party, is also said to be considering working with other existing political parties, including the Ukombozi Political Party and other political formations linked to opposition figures.
Sources familiar with the meeting also told the media that Siaya Governor James Orengo expressed interest in flying the movement’s flag in the 2027 election.
The developments come as opposition leaders and emerging political formations intensify consultations and negotiations ahead of the 2027 General Election.
