The 2026/27 Premier League season has exploded into life, delivering goals, shocks, late drama and statement victories in a breathtaking opening weekend.
Reigning champions Arsenal set the early benchmark on Friday night, cruising past newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 to launch their title defence in commanding fashion.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute from a Riccardo Calafiori assist before Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute after costly error by the Coventry goalkeeper who failed to save a beautifully crafted pass from a new summer signing Christos Tzolis, who joined Arsenal from Club Brugge for £34 million.
Martin Ødegaard then put the result beyond doubt in the 49th minutes from a pass laid perfectly for him to finish by Ben White.
The Gunners comfortably saw out the game and immediately sent a warning to their title rivals.
But if Arsenal provided the opening statement, Manchester United provided the weekend’s biggest shock.
Michael Carrick’s first official match as United manager ended in disappointment as newly promoted Hull City stunned the Red Devils 2-0 at home.
Semi Ajayi broke the deadlock in the 17th minute before Mendy doubled for Hull’s advantage in the 38th, with the two strikes proving enough to condemn United to a nightmare start.
Tottenham Hotspur suffered another major setback later that evening as Brentford swept them aside 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Janelt made it 2-0 in the 33rd.
Kayode added a third in the 49th minute to put the Bees firmly in control. Their last season’s top scorer Igor Thiago then missed a second-half penalty that could have made it four, but Brentford held firm to secure a stunning clean sheet.
Sunday brought a four-goal thriller at St James’ Park as Newcastle United and Liverpool shared the spoils in a dramatic 2-2 draw.
Despite losing star players Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham during the transfer window, Newcastle struck first when Anthony Elanga scored just five minutes into the contest.
Liverpool responded through Cody Gakpo in the 55th minute, but Joe Willock restored Newcastle’s advantage only three minutes later.
Just when the hosts appeared destined for victory, Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up deep into stoppage time, converting a crucial penalty in the 90+4th minute to rescue a point for Liverpool.
Manchester City then completed another dramatic comeback, fighting from behind to defeat Bournemouth 2-1 under Enzo Maresca.
Marcus Tavernier gave the Cherries the lead in the 26th minute and Bournemouth held their advantage deep into the second half.
However, Marc Guéhi levelled in the 85th minute before Joško Gvardiol struck in the 90+3rd minute to complete a stunning turnaround and secure all three points for City.
And with the opening weekend already delivering enough twists to fill a month, attention now shifts to Monday’s London derby at Craven Cottage. Chelsea begin the Xavi Alonso era against Fulham in a battle between two former Real Madrid CF managers, with Xavi Alonso now leading Chelsea and Alvaro Arbeloa in charge of Fulham. Chelsea enter the fixture expected to win after a huge summer of recruitment, including the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa to further strengthen an already formidable attack.
If the opening matches are anything to go by, the 2026/27 Premier League season could be heading towards a campaign packed with title drama, managerial battles, unexpected upsets and unforgettable finishes.
