Did you know Semaglutide?

Did you know semaglutide is a medicine that is mainly used to help manage type 2 diabetes and, in certain formulations, obesity?

It belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists and works by helping regulate blood sugar, slowing digestion and reducing appetite.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in well-known medicines such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

When prepared as an injectable medicine, it is generally a clear, colourless liquid.

However, researchers and pharmaceutical companies have been developing other versions of semaglutide that could potentially make the medicine more widely available and increase competition in the growing diabetes and weight-management market.

According to Reuters, Polish pharmaceutical company Celon Pharma has reported promising early results for Reduzek, an experimental generic version of semaglutide.

Researchers tested the medicine in 91 healthy volunteers and found that it showed comparable absorption to the reference semaglutide products, a result known as bioequivalence.

The findings, announced on August 20, 2026, are an important step in the development of Reduzek and pushed Celon Pharma’s shares higher.

If the medicine eventually receives regulatory approval, it could provide another source of semaglutide and potentially increase competition in the market.

However, Reduzek is not yet an approved replacement for Ozempic or Wegovy.

The company still needs to complete the necessary development and regulatory processes before the medicine can become available to patients.

The early findings are therefore promising, but they do not mean that patients should switch or begin using the experimental medicine.

So, while semaglutide is already widely known for its role in diabetes and weight management, the development of Reduzek could mark another important chapter in the rapidly expanding world of GLP-1 medicines.
