National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has defended the Kenya Kwanza administration amid growing criticism over political violence reported during a rally in Homa Bay on Sunday.
Ichung’wah has dismissed calls by opposition leaders for President William Ruto to be investigated by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over allegations linked to rising cases of political violence.
The Majority Leader instead accused opposition leaders of contributing to lawlessness in the country, arguing that some incidents of violence witnessed during political rallies are deliberately staged.
Ichung’wah said an ICC investigation, if initiated, would ultimately vindicate the government from the allegations being levelled against it.
He also revisited the recent loss in Ol Kalou, claiming that Kenya Kwanza supporters faced threats during the political contest.
The Kikuyu MP further criticised what he termed dictatorial tendencies within some political parties in the Mt Kenya region. He accused certain parties of limiting political competition by locking out potential candidates and portraying the region as a one-party, one-leader political zone.
His remarks come after opposition leaders appealed to the ICC to take action against President Ruto, accusing his administration of failing to contain criminal activities and protect fundamental freedoms.
The opposition has also raised concerns over the escalation of political violence, calling for investigations into those responsible and accountability for alleged violations of citizens’ rights.
Ichung’wah’s defence marks the latest political response to mounting pressure on the government over the security situation and growing tensions surrounding political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
