People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has called on President William Ruto to take responsibility for what she describes as a wave of state-sponsored violence targeting opposition leaders.
Speaking after a Sunday attack on the Linda Mwananchi movement in Homa Bay County, Karua condemned the use of armed goons to disrupt political gatherings.
The incident forced businesses to close and left two journalists injured.“If you cannot handle political competition, resign. Do not destabilize an entire country simply because its people are demanding a different choice,” Karua said in a statement.
She accused the administration of encouraging attacks on opponents while staying silent on upholding democracy.
Karua warned that the repeated nature of the incidents “raises serious questions about the growing use of organized violence to intimidate political opponents and restrict citizens’ constitutional freedoms.”Other opposition leaders echoed her.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka alleged a plot to compromise the 2027 General Election, while DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa called the alliance between police and “goons” a violation of the constitution.
Karua, who was flanked by Kalonzo and former DP Rigathi Gachagua at a recent church service in Nairobi, said political competition should not be reduced to violence.
The Presidency has not responded to the latest allegations.
Opposition leaders say they will continue nationwide mobilization despite what they call growing impunity.
