Opposition Cries Foul Over Homa Bay Chaos

Opposition leaders have raised concerns over the violence reported in Homa Bay and Nakuru counties over the weekend, accusing the Kenya Kwanza administration of using unrest as part of a wider scheme to retain power.

DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, who hosted Wiper leaders at his Wamunyoro home, alleged that the government was using violence and criminal gangs to create instability and potentially delay the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua further accused the police of failing to act against goons allegedly involved in the violence, claiming some officers had become accomplices by allowing the attacks to take place in their presence.

The opposition has appealed to the international community to intervene and pressure the government to restore order, warning that continued violence could push the country towards anarchy.

United Green Movement Party leader David Maraga also condemned the reported attacks, including violence against journalists. The former Chief Justice accused the State of undermining police independence and called for reforms to ensure the National Police Service operates independently and ends impunity.

Meanwhile, police say they have launched a manhunt for individuals suspected of taking part in the Homa Bay violence.

The Linda Mwananchi movement, however, claims its supporters are being targeted despite being the aggrieved party. The group has renewed calls for the arrest of Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Homa Bay Town MP George Peter Kaluma, accusing them of allegedly instigating the violence.

The accusations and counter-accusations come amid growing political tensions, with opposition leaders warning that the recent incidents could have wider implications for the country’s political stability ahead of the 2027 elections.
