Fourteen elephants have died in and around Amboseli National Park after a suspected toxic illness struck the herd.
The Kenya Wildlife Service says the animals, mostly mothers and calves, showed signs of partial paralysis and died within 1-2 days. Carcasses were found in the park, Kimana Sanctuary, and Kuku Ranch.
Preliminary tests point to a possible toxin, but KWS says more lab work is needed to confirm the cause and source, Water points and surrounding areas are now being tested.
Officials stress there is no danger to people and the illness is not contagious.
Conservationists call it one of the worst losses in Amboseli in decades, renewing urgent calls to protect the park’s water and habitat.
