Amnesty International Kenya and local rights defenders have raised alarm over political violence targeting the Linda Mwananchi movement and journalist in Homa Bay County, calling for an independent probe and protection for organisers .
The warning comes after an attack on August 4, 2026, in which six people were arrested over the assault of Linda Mwananchi coordinator Samuel Nyauke, human rights defender Evance Oloo and two other men.
Protesters later lit bonfires and clashed with police, disrupting businesses and transport in Homa Bay Town.
Amnesty International Kenya condemned the violence and demanded accountability, adding to calls for authorities to investigate attacks on political actors.
The group has also flagged a wider trend of shrinking civic space in Kenya, with protests and civil society facing increased pressure.Religious leaders joined the condemnation.
Bishop Abrahams Wanda Odongo of the Interfaith Network Nyanza said the use of goons “will cause anarchy in Homa Bay County” and could scare investors.
He urged politicians to stop hiring youths to disrupt opponents and asked police to act firmly.
Linda Mwananchi leaders said the assault was not isolated and accused some actors of trying to intimidate supporters.
Organisers have formally requested police protection for the upcoming rallies.
Police Commander Lawrence Koelem confirmed the six suspects were in custody and said investigations were ongoing,he urged calm saying only those culpable would face charges.
Human rights groups now want guarantees that political gatherings will be peaceful and that no one is targeted for their views.
