A police officer attached to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii’s security detail is in custody after allegedly shooting a 45-year-old woman five times at a GSU compound in Eldoret.
Police in Uasin Gishu County are investigating the fatal shooting of 45-year-old Doris Murei Nandi at the General Service Unit (GSU) Mess compound in Naiberi, near Eldoret.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening, August 30, following an altercation between Nandi and Police Constable Nathan Kirwa, who was armed with a rifle.
Kirwa, who is reported to be attached to Governor Jonathan Bii’s security detail, allegedly opened fire during the confrontation, shooting Nandi multiple times. He reportedly fled the scene before he was later apprehended and disarmed.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani said investigators recovered seven spent 9mm cartridges, a rifle holster and a Toyota Corolla 110 believed to be linked to the officer.
The body of Nandi was transferred to the Eldoret Hospital Mortuary, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted as part of the investigation.
Police are continuing to investigate what triggered the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Kirwa is expected to face court proceedings as investigators finalize the case.
