Winnie Odinga Eyes Nairobi Senate
Winnie Odinga has declared she will run for the Nairobi Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.
The East African Legislative Assembly MP made the announcement on October 15, 2026, during the first anniversary memorial of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, at Migwena Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.
Speaking to supporters, Winnie said losing her father broke her deeply, but she was now ready to chart her own elective path. She pointed to current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who was present at the event and is said to be eyeing the presidency in 2027.
“As Edwin Sifuna searches for a higher office, I see there is space. That is why I will stand for senator of Nairobi,” she said, adding that she wants to go with young people.
The move sets up a high profile ODM contest. Langata MP Felix Odiwuor Jalang’o declared interest in the same seat in February and responded with a cryptic post, “To the wire!! I am ready!!”
Winnie, daughter of Raila and Ida Odinga, was elected to EALA in December 2022 and has been vocal about ODM’s future since her father’s death in October 2025.
