AI, Goonism Threaten 2027 Poll
Kenya’s 2027 election could face a new and dangerous threat as the misuse of artificial intelligence and rising political goonism emerge as major concerns ahead of the polls.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is engaging county security teams across the country to identify potential electoral hotspots and prepare for heightened political activity as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
The engagement is aimed at mapping areas considered vulnerable to political violence and other disruptions while allowing security agencies and electoral officials to identify risks early and put preventive measures in place.
The growing use of artificial intelligence has also raised concerns over the spread of manipulated videos, fake audio, fabricated images and other misleading content that could influence voters and fuel political tensions.
At the same time, the resurgence of political goonism has heightened fears that campaign activities could turn violent, particularly in areas with a history of electoral unrest.
With political activity expected to intensify as the elections approach, the IEBC and security agencies are seeking to strengthen preparedness and safeguard the electoral process.
The focus is now shifting from responding to election-related threats after they occur to identifying and addressing potential risks before they escalate.
