A journey to the Coast turned into heartbreak on Wednesday morning after a Dreamline Express bus rammed into a stalled truck along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
The crash happened at Mghalani, between Taru and Mackinnon Road in Kwale County. The Mombasa-bound bus, registration KDY 404L, hit the rear of a stationary trailer, KBS 609R, that was ferrying a container.
The front part of the bus was completely crushed, with debris scattered across the busy road.
Two passengers lost their lives, including one man who was found alive but trapped in the wreckage. He later succumbed to his injuries. Six others were rushed to nearby hospitals with various injuries.
According to Samburu Sub-County Police Commander Lydia Mambo, preliminary findings show the lorry had stalled on the highway without placing any warning triangles behind it.”That may have contributed to the accident,” Mambo said.
She added that both vehicles will be towed to Taru Police Station as investigations continue.Coast Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Asha Wario urged drivers to be extra cautious, especially in the morning when showers reduce visibility, warning that those who flout traffic rules will be prosecuted.
