Kenya has selected One Woman One Bra as its official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
The film was selected by the Kenya Oscars Selection Committee after competing with two other productions, Kikuyu Land and Tides.Directed by Kenyan filmmaker Vincho Nchogu and produced by Nigeria’s Josh Olaoluwa, One Woman One Bra is a Kenya-Nigeria co-production set among the Maasai community in Loita.
The film follows a woman as she searches for her identity and explores her relationship with her family and community.
Its story draws heavily from Maasai culture and the Kenyan landscape.According to reports, the selection committee considered several elements of the production, including its originality, performances, costumes, sound design and portrayal of Maasai life.
The film has already received international attention. It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2025 and later screened at other international film festivals.Its lead actress, Sarah Karei, also received a Special Jury Mention at the Tribeca Film Festival, while the film won an Audience Award.
The Oscar submission marks another significant moment for Kenya’s film industry. The country has submitted films to the Academy Awards several times since 2012, although no Kenyan submission has so far secured an Oscar nomination.The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 14, 2027.
Before then, One Woman One Bra will go through the Academy’s selection process alongside international submissions from other countries.For Kenyan filmmakers, the submission provides an opportunity to place a locally rooted story before an international audience and showcase the country’s growing film talent.
