In a sharp attack on global justice, US President Trump Urges Nations To Abandon ICChas called on every member of the International Criminal Court to walk away from it.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump described the Hague based court as an “out of control institution” run by “an evil group of people” and urged countries to “officially resign from this rogue institution immediately.”He said the United States would never allow its soldiers or officials to face what he called show trials by an anti American tribunal with no jurisdiction over America.
The US is not a member of the ICC and has never ratified the Rome Statute, but the court has long been a target for Washington.
The Trump administration has already sanctioned several ICC judges and staff after the court issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a close US ally.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has gone further, vowing to dismantle the court “brick by brick” and calling it a threat to US sovereignty.
The ICC, which prosecutes genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, has 124 member states.
