Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has formally handed over the party leadership to his deputy, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, in a move that marks the end of an era and the start of a new chapter for the former ruling party.
The handover happened on Tuesday at the Jubilee headquarters in Nairobi during a National Executive Council meeting.
Uhuru told members that while he is stepping aside as party leader, he is not leaving the party.
“While we wait for NDC, I have decided to let my deputy take over the party leadership. I will remain as a senior member offering advisory services,” he said.
The decision follows a High Court ruling that upheld Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, which bars retired presidents from holding party office beyond six months after leaving State House.
The court said they can still be members and participate in politics.An emotional Matiang’i accepted, promising not to let Uhuru down and vowing to rebuild Jubilee ahead of 2027.
“I have had a front row seat in your government. We will keep Jubilee on the path of inclusion,” he said.Final approval now rests with the National Delegates Convention.
