England Hit By Injury Storm
England’s preparations for their UEFA Nations League campaign have suffered a major setback after five key players; Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Tino Livramento and Kobbie Mainoo withdrew from the squad because of injuries.
The withdrawals come just days before England open their Nations League Group A3 campaign against reigning world champions Spain at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has called up Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White as replacements.
Palmer’s absence is particularly significant. The Chelsea forward had returned to England’s plans after missing the 2026 World Cup squad and had made an impressive start to the season. He had scored four goals and provided two assists in seven appearances for Chelsea before suffering his latest injury setback.
Rice’s withdrawal is another major blow to England’s midfield. The Arsenal midfielder has been an important part of the national team’s midfield structure and his absence leaves Tuchel with fewer experienced options against Spain.
Rashford’s absence also reduces England’s attacking alternatives, while the withdrawals of Livramento and Mainoo further affect the manager’s squad depth.
The changes have forced Tuchel to adjust his plans only days before a difficult opening fixture. Garner and Gibbs-White now have an opportunity to establish themselves within the national-team setup.
England’s schedule makes the timing particularly important. After facing Spain at Wembley on September 26, England will travel to Prague to meet Czechia on September 29 before travelling to Rijeka to face Croatia on October 3. They will then host Czechia on October 6.
The opening encounter with Spain will immediately test England’s ability to cope without several important players.
Spain enter the contest as the reigning world champions, adding further significance to the fixture.
The Nations League campaign also comes during a new international calendar arrangement in which the September and October international windows have been combined into one extended three-week period.
For Tuchel, the immediate task will be finding a balance between maintaining England’s tactical approach and adapting to the absence of several established players.
The injuries therefore provide an early examination of England’s squad depth. With Spain waiting at Wembley, Tuchel will have little time to settle his revised team before one of the most demanding fixtures of the opening Nations League round.
