Round five of the Premier League season turned into a weekend of surprises, setbacks and spectacular goals, as England’s traditional heavyweights endured a turbulent three days.
From shocking defeats to dramatic victories and frustrating draws, the Big Six discovered that reputation alone guarantees nothing in the Premier League.
As the weekend unfolded, lower-ranked opposition repeatedly exposed weaknesses, leaving fans wondering what had happened to some of the league’s biggest names.
The drama began under the Friday-night lights at the Gtech Community Stadium, where Brentford produced one of the weekend’s biggest shocks by dismantling Chelsea 3–0.
The opening 45 minutes offered little warning of what was to come, with Chelsea struggling to create clear opportunities as the two sides went into the break level.
But after halftime, the Bees came alive. Jaidon Anthony broke the deadlock in the 61st minute following a VAR check, sending the home crowd into celebration and Chelsea into trouble.
The Blues pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but their attacking approach left gaps at the back. Brentford took full advantage, with Igor Thiago making it 2–0 in the 83rd minute before substitute Fábio Carvalho added a stoppage-time goal to complete a stunning night for the hosts.

Tottenham Hotspur walked into their home clash with Aston Villa hoping to recover from the early-season pressure, but instead found themselves staring at another painful defeat.
Villa struck at the worst possible moment before halftime, with Johan Manzambi putting the visitors ahead in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time.
Spurs returned from the break needing an immediate response, but Villa had other plans.
Nicolas Jackson doubled the advantage in the 67th minute before Emiliano Buendía added a third in the 79th.
Tottenham suddenly found themselves three goals down at home. A late surge offered a glimpse of hope as Conor Gallagher pulled one back in the 86th minute, followed by Jan Paul van Hecke in the 98th.
But the clock was against Spurs, and Villa held on to escape with a thrilling 3–2 victory.
While Tottenham’s late fightback provided plenty of drama, the afternoon became even darker for another heavyweight.
Down on the south coast, Arsenal suffered a nightmare against Brighton & Hove Albion, collapsing to a 3–0 defeat.
Brighton wasted little time putting the visitors under pressure, with veteran midfielder Pascal Groß breaking the deadlock in the 31st minute.
Arsenal struggled to respond, and their problems deepened just before halftime when Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s lead in the 45th minute.
The second half brought no Arsenal revival. Instead, Chema Andrés struck in the 57th minute to complete Brighton’s three-goal rout and send Mikel Arteta’s side home empty-handed.
With Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal all suffering defeats, attention turned to Sunday, when Liverpool were given the chance to restore some pride to the Premier League’s traditional heavyweights.
At the Vitality Stadium, Liverpool faced an AFC Bournemouth side determined to make life difficult. The first half ended goalless, with neither team able to find the breakthrough.
Liverpool eventually found the answer in the 57th minute when Alexander Isak calmly found the back of the net.
Bournemouth continued to apply pressure, and Liverpool picked up yellow cards along the way, but the visitors remained disciplined enough to protect their narrow advantage.
When the final whistle arrived, Liverpool had secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory and a clean sheet.
Then came the match that turned Sunday afternoon into a goal-scoring carnival.
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City and Sunderland produced an eight-goal spectacle that had supporters on the edge of their seats from beginning to end.
City struck first through Enzo Fernández in the ninth minute who opened the party, but Sunderland immediately showed they were not prepared to sit back, with Brian Brobbey restoring parity.
Rayan Cherki then put City back in front, only for Brobbey to strike again in the 33rd minute and make it 2–2.
The chaos was far from over. Antoine Semenyo scored twice to push City into a commanding 4–2 lead, but Brobbey completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute to drag Sunderland back into the contest.
With the visitors threatening to produce an unlikely comeback, Erling Haaland finally settled City’s nerves in the 81st minute, sealing a remarkable 5–3 victory.
After the goals, shocks and late drama of the previous matches, the weekend finally came to a quieter conclusion at Craven Cottage.
Manchester United faced Fulham knowing that three points would be valuable, but instead had to settle for a 1–1 draw.
The match remained closely contested, with neither side able to establish complete control and opportunities arriving at both ends.
United struggled to build consistent attacking momentum throughout the 90 minutes, and despite their efforts, neither team could find the decisive goal.
