TikTok Joins Kenya’s Tax Hunt

Kenyan content creators are waking up to a new reality, the money they make from TikTok is increasingly coming under the country’s tax radar, with the platform now asking creators for their tax details.

TikTok has begun notifying Kenyan creators who receive payments through the platform to submit personal and tax residency information as it moves to comply with Kenya’s tax requirements. The form asks creators to provide details including their name, email address, country of residence and whether they are Kenyan residents or non-residents.

The move puts TikTok alongside other major digital platforms implementing Kenya specific tax requirements. Google has confirmed that it will withhold 5 per cent from applicable YouTube earnings for Kenya-based AdSense accounts, beginning with September 2026 earnings paid in October. YouTube creators must also submit a verified KRA PIN by October 1, 2026, or their payments may be held.

TikTok, however, has not specified when deductions will begin or given a deadline for creators to submit the requested information. Reports citing the form indicate that different withholding rates may apply depending on residency, but TikTok has not publicly clarified how those rates will apply to individual payout programmes.

The development is likely to draw attention from Kenyan creators who rely on digital platforms for income, as taxation increasingly becomes part of the online creator economy.
