What if the cameras watching you can see everyone ,except you? A Berlin artist has created a bizarre-looking shirt designed to confuse AI surveillance systems and make its wearer disappear from the camera’s person detection.
The garment, known as Digital Camouflage, was created as an artistic response to the growing use of automated surveillance and artificial intelligence-powered systems capable of identifying people through camera footage.
Rather than trying to physically hide the wearer, the shirt is designed to interfere with how AI interprets the images captured by surveillance cameras.
Its unusual design consists of brightly coloured shapes arranged across the fabric, producing a pattern that can disrupt some of the visual cues used by computer-vision systems to identify a human figure.
The concept takes advantage of the fact that artificial intelligence does not interpret an image in exactly the same way as the human eye.
AI-powered detection systems analyse patterns and visual features before determining whether an object in a camera frame is a person, vehicle or another object.
The designer experimented with this process by creating clothing capable of interfering with automated person detection.
In tests using YOLO, an object-detection system used in computer vision, the person wearing the shirt reportedly stopped receiving the system’s usual person label under certain conditions.
Other people in the same footage could still be detected, while the wearer of the colourful shirt was not recognised as a person by the system.
The experiment has attracted attention because of the growing use of AI surveillance in public spaces.
Modern surveillance cameras are increasingly capable of doing more than simply recording footage. Depending on the technology installed, AI systems can analyse images, detect people and objects and identify movement automatically.
That has fuelled concerns about privacy and how much information about people’s movements can be collected without their direct knowledge or consent.
Digital Camouflage offers an unconventional response to that problem.Instead of disappearing from the camera entirely, the wearer remains clearly visible to human observers while attempting to confuse the automated system analysing the footage.
However, the shirt does not provide guaranteed protection against surveillance.Its effectiveness depends on the AI model being used, camera positioning, lighting, distance and other environmental conditions. A different surveillance system could potentially identify the wearer despite the pattern.
