The threat of Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo merging into one is now closer than ever, raising fears of an ecological disaster in the Rift Valley.
Fresh satellite data from December 2025 shows the alkaline Lake Bogoria has hit its spill point, with water already seeping through wetlands towards the freshwater Lake Baringo, the only freshwater lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley.
If the highly saline waters mix with Baringo, scientists warn it could kill fish, hippos and crocodiles and destroy livelihoods for thousands of fisher families who depend on the lake for food and income.
On August 4, 2026, Defence PS Patrick Mariru led a government inspection tour of both lakes.
The state now plans a major engineering intervention a six-kilometre evacuation tunnel, a 40 kilometre canal to Chemolingot and a five kilometre dyke at Sandai.
The diverted water will also support irrigation of 100,000 acres in Baringo and Turkana.
For locals like farmers in Loboi, the rescue cannot come soon enough.
