Robots Take to the Streets

What if the machines coming for human jobs are now the ones demanding that governments protect those jobs? That bizarre scene played out in Warsaw, Poland, where about 30 robots joined a demonstration calling for tighter controls on artificial intelligence and raising fresh concerns over the future of human employment.

Robots took an unusual place in a debate normally dominated by politicians, workers and technology experts when about 30 humanoid and quadruped machines gathered outside Poland’s Ministry of Digital Affairs on Monday, September 7.

The machines marched in circles, waved flags and were accompanied by slogans including Defend workplaces, Time for rules and Don’t wait, regulate, which were played through loudspeakers during the demonstration.

The event was organised by Democratism, an initiative seeking to draw attention to the potential consequences of rapid advances in artificial intelligence and robotics on the labour market.

Organiser Grzegorz Kuliś said the demonstration was meant to show that the threat of automation is no longer a distant possibility, particularly as AI-powered machines become capable of performing increasingly complex tasks.

If we don’t react now, we may soon have a problem,” Kuliś said, calling for regulations aimed at protecting workers from being displaced by emerging technologies.

One of the robots displayed at the protest was the humanoid AgiBot A3, highlighting the rapid development of machines designed to operate in environments traditionally occupied by humans.

Poland’s Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski also met with the organisers and acknowledged the challenges posed by increasingly sophisticated AI systems. He warned that the combination of powerful AI models and advanced humanoid robots could create significant challenges if the technology develops without adequate oversight.

The demonstration comes as Poland moves ahead with the implementation of the European Union’s AI regulatory framework, with provisions of the EU AI Act beginning to apply in the country from August 2026.

Although the image of robots protesting may appear like a scene from a science-fiction film, the organisers are using it to raise a very real question, if machines become capable of replacing humans in more workplaces, who will decide where the line should be drawn?
