Is personal ambition finally taking a back seat? Rigathi Gachagua says he is ready to play second fiddle if that is what it takes to defeat President William Ruto.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, divisions over who should lead the United Opposition into the presidential race remain unresolved, with focus now shifting to how the coalition’s principals will settle on a flag bearer.
Speaking in Washington, D.C., United Opposition figure and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua said he would be willing to shelve his presidential ambitions if the coalition settled on a candidate capable of defeating President William Ruto in the first round.
Gachagua called for leaders within the opposition to combine their political strengths, saying personal ambitions should take a back seat to the coalition’s broader objective.

His remarks appeared to draw a different response from his Democratic Party counterpart, Justin Muturi, who attended Sunday prayers at A.C.K. St Paul’s Church in Othaya. While Muturi also called for political magnanimity, he opposed relying on a scientific process to determine the coalition’s flag bearer.
Meanwhile, People’s Party leader Ndindi Nyoro, during a tour of Kirinyaga on Sunday, called for the swift selection of a presidential candidate, citing growing anxiety among Kenyans.
The debate comes as the People’s Renaissance Movement, during a rally in Tharaka Nithi County, urged Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to leave the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and join the opposition camp.
