Governor Kimani Wamatangi has been consistently distributing certified seeds and fertilizer across Kiambu since 2023, with county records indicating over 300,000 to 600,000 farmers have benefited county-wide to address food insecurity.
Kiganjo Ward came alive as Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi led a major distribution of free certified maize seeds and fertilizer to over 10,000 smallholder farmers in Gatundu South.
The exercise, held ahead of the planting season, is part of the county’s flagship food security program fully funded by the county government. Each farmer received 2kg of high-yielding maize seed and 10kg of fertilizer, varieties researched to suit Kiambu’s altitude, soil type and rainfall patterns.
Governor Wamatangi said the initiative targets families who cannot afford inputs due to rising costs, noting that poor seed quality has been hurting harvests.
“Many of our people are impoverished and cannot afford fertilizer and seeds, which are the backbone of farming. We want our people to grow their own food and stop relying on relief,” he said.Beneficiaries welcomed the support, saying it came at the right time.
For many, like 68-year-old Mary Wanjiku who farms half an acre, the program means food on the table and surplus to sell at the local posho mill.
County Agriculture officials said agricultural extension officers were on site to offer training on spacing, planting and climate-smart practices.
